This case presents a precision trawl net upgrade project for hairtail fishing in the Minnan sea area, focusing on improving net durability, catch stability, and economic returns under high-intensity operations. The upgrade targeted vessels operating in strong currents and high-density hairtail schools, where traditional trawl nets frequently suffered puncture damage and shortened service life.
The vessel involved is a 1000 HP offshore trawler conducting multi-voyage daily operations. Prior to the upgrade, conventional nets experienced frequent belly tearing caused by dense hairtail impact, resulting in high repair frequency, unstable catch output, and increased operating cost. Net breakage rates were reported to reach up to 30% during peak seasons.
To address these challenges, a hairtail-specific PE multifilament trawl net system was introduced. The design adopted a multi-zone mesh configuration, including a 150 mm wing net section to reduce water resistance, a 100 mm transition mesh to stabilize fish schools, and a reinforced 40 mm diamond mesh at the codend to prevent puncture from hairtail strikes. The main body used 480D PE multifilament yarn with 320 strands and a 0.42 mm diameter, achieving a measured anti-puncture strength of 102 kN/m².
After deployment, the upgraded trawl net demonstrated significant performance improvements. Single-voyage catch output reached 12.8 tons, setting a local record for hairtail trawling in the Minnan sea area. The high-quality product rate reached 91%, with silver-film body integrity exceeding 95%. Fuel consumption per ton of catch decreased to approximately 0.18 tons, lower than the industry average of 0.25 tons.
From an operational standpoint, the net achieved continuous service for 18 months without major damage, effectively doubling the service life of ordinary trawl nets. Annual maintenance cost was reduced to around 92,000 yuan, compared to the industry average of 150,000 yuan. The improved durability and stability enabled intensive fishing schedules of up to three voyages per day, significantly increasing daily harvest capacity.
This case confirms that hairtail-specific PE anti-puncture trawl nets can deliver substantial gains in efficiency, durability, and economic performance for high-horsepower offshore operations in the Minnan region.
