Development and Application of Modern Trawl Fishing Technology

Trawl fishing is one of the most widely used fishing methods in the global marine fishing industry. Trawl fishing involves towing a large fishing net through the water behind a fishing vessel in order to catch fish and other marine organisms. Depending on how the net is operated, trawling can generally be divided into two main types: bottom trawling and midwater trawling. Bottom trawling is typically used to catch fish that live on or near the seabed, such as cod and flatfish. Midwater trawling, on the other hand, targets fish that swim in the middle layers of the water column, including species such as mackerel and herring.

 

In recent years, advances in fish-finding technology and vessel equipment have significantly improved the efficiency of trawl fishing operations. Modern fishing vessels are often equipped with sonar fish detection systems, satellite navigation technology, and automated net hauling equipment. These tools help fishermen locate fish schools more accurately and conduct fishing operations at the most productive times and locations.

 

Fishing gear technology has also improved significantly. Modern trawl nets are commonly made from strong synthetic fibers such as polyethylene and nylon. These materials offer high strength, light weight, and resistance to corrosion, making them suitable for long-term use in marine environments. Improvements in mesh design and net structure also help increase catch efficiency while reducing the capture of non-target species.

 

In addition, researchers and fisheries organizations are developing more environmentally friendly trawling technologies. For example, some modern trawl nets include escape panels or special openings that allow smaller or non-target fish to escape from the net. These innovations help reduce ecological impacts and support more sustainable fishing practices.

 

Digital technologies are also playing an increasing role in modern trawl fishing operations. Satellite data and oceanographic information allow fishing vessels to analyze sea temperature, ocean currents, and fish distribution before conducting fishing activities. This helps fishermen select more productive fishing areas and improve operational efficiency.

 

Overall, modern trawl fishing technology continues to evolve. Advances in fishing vessels, gear materials, and digital monitoring technologies are transforming traditional fishing operations.
